Here's what's involved and how you go about it:
What’s the work?
Site editors view new content, between 10 and 30 videos every week. You don’t need to comment (you can if you like) but you do need to rate each video, using the star system. Editors also need to log what they do.
What happens to the best rated videos?
Editors send on their recommendations, I’ll watch the ones you’ve rated as 5 star and they may get put into Radar Picks. They may also, with filmmakers agreement, get uploaded to 10 Radar channels on online video sites from YouTube to Blip.tv. Some will also be sent on for features in Pitchfork and Shots Ring Out.
What do editors get out of it?
Your next year’s membership will be free. You might also do it just because you enjoy it and maybe you want to add curating experience to your CV.
How might this grow and change?
I’m planning to have a system that works like SliceThePie, where scouts who accurately predict future track successes share in the earnings of that track. We’re a bit of a way off that yet, there’s some other things I want to get going here first, plus the earnings potential of online video is miniscule at the moment, compared to Mp3s. But all that will change…
Anything else potential editors need to know?
Some more inexperienced filmmakers link videos to Radar where they haven’t got copyright permissions, ie tribute videos to Madonna tracks, mash-ups from TV cartoon series etc. If editors come across videos where they think copyright is infringed, you’re asked to send on a polite, pro forma (ie already written) message explaining why it can’t be on Radar. Or if you’re feeling timid, email me and I’ll do it. Either way, it needs flagging up, for it is illegal.
Sounds fab. How do I become a Site Editor?
Email me caroline@radarmusicvideos.com and list 3 videos you’ve seen on the site you've rated as 5 star. Easy.
Thank you!
