Pegz - what would happen (Isore See See)
The video is an almost perfectly literal interpretation of the words and structure of the track. The central character seamlessly travels across the various cuts and locations, effectively communicating the fragmented snippets of life one might consider on their final day. The concept begins to meander a bit by the end when the track begins to drag on, making me wish there were a bit more conceptual closure, but either way the editor deserves a bonus for this one.
Diplo - The Rainbow Hunters (Ben Lister)
I was kinda over stop-motion, but this beautiful use of the technique has allowed me to open up my heart one more time. The tracking on this video is amazing and I'm sure was a lot of hard work moving through that forest location. Lovely colors and beautiful movement make for a job well done.
Blondelle - A Sketch of Jets (Lucas)
This is a standard performance piece, yet uses the tools at hand with great artistry. The lighting looks top-notch, the cuts and fluid camera movement all scream quality, and
more amazingly this is the directors first ever MV. Great video...entertaining and fresh, all the while making the band look trump.
Surfact - Monkey on Your Back (Sigridastrup)
I can appreciate the fact that you took a few good-looking effects and used them with continuity and artistry throughout the video. So many clips get bogged down with the, 'look at what I can do in post production' syndrome. The long-zoom-to-eye-effect is superb and nicely done. I also enjoyed how you filmed each of the band-mates separately in different terrains, giving a basic video a constant fresh look. Promising work.
Flipron - Dogboy vs Monsters (Alex de Campi)
Extremely comical and has a nice B-movie feel. I guess with a title like Dogboy vs Monsters, that's exactly what I should have been expecting. I especially like how the Dogboy decides that he'd rather play with other dog, instead of the beautiful woman, right after he saves her from the giant crabs. There's probably a metaphor in there somewhere but it eludes me.
Dynamic - Tribal Wars (Generic) members' featured video
A rap video that is using conventions without making them into stereotypes? I'm amazed and delighted. It has a nice pace with fast cutting, keeping this rap video two stops above the rest. Well done.
Elemental - Cup Of Brown Joy (Moog) members' featured video
Extolling the merits and fashionability of tea, berating the culture of coffee, making tributes to Monty Python, and dressing up for a safari. These are the pieces that Moog has decided to carefully blend together to showcase this hilarious track for British 'rapper/funny man' Elemental. The video does a bang up job at visualizing the dramatic and comedic fair of the lyrics while keeping things grounded enough to be taken seriously. Jolly good time. Pinkies out!
Bizzy Jenkins - Serenade (Stilif) members' featured video
A slow metaphorical interpretation of running away from a relationship or something like that. Women chase Bizzy from the darkness to cover him with oil. I don’t get it either but it's intriguing.
The Rolling Blackouts - Eskom (Marmaluke) members' featured video
Although a parody and meant for a target audience, it's still quirky and funny. A simple video, maybe a little childish at times but it’s supposed to send a message that the African energy situation sucks. It's definitely more than I would do if I was being gouged for electricity.
Smsd - manifesto / track 1 'mr thomas is ill' (Visual Hyrbrid) members' featured video
This video tests the conventions of what a MUSIC video is. It has music and video but no song. Created from a strict standard of rules, I'm amazed at what has been done. Especially keeping in mind that it was all shot in a day, and made for a song that didn't exist until AFTER the footage was taken. I applaud the creativity.
