Moog,

I finally saw the trailer for DER DIE TOLLKIRSCHE AUSGRAEBT. I know why you told me about about. It's right up my alley. Awesome! Thanks for the tip. I hope to see it soon. I Love it! I didn't know about this film at all.

Hope you are well. I have been very busy working many long hours and moving soon...sorry it took so long to reply to your film recommendation.

Catch up with you later,
Sophia Segal

Thanks! Just a character that came up out of my head, but influences do stem from the dark, macabre and comedic vintage vaudevillian like qualities of the past...more info about the character I came up with is at my VIDEO BIO PAGE: http://web.mac.com/sophiamedium/website/Music_Video.html

Thanks again!

Nice Job... I got a "Clockwork Chaplin" feeling when i saw it. 2 very good, varied influences. Not sure if it was intentional but i like it. Great job.

Thanks for articulating what you meant by your comment, it was quite confusing at first... so thanks for the kudos for being "fresh" and "experimental" in trying to pull away from conventional approaches to music videos, if I can bring some kind of fine art approach to my way of seeing, storytelling and visual language from eras that lend a different twist, I'm gonna do the best I can.

Thanks for the thumbs up on editing! I think it's stands on it's own for over all execution and being nominated right off the bat for concept, content and editing work.

Like I said onward ho!

Great editing style, but I have to agree with Moog that a wider variety of shots would have enhanced this video quite drastically

Hey by this I mean your video is fresh and experimental. You follow no conventions wether it's in the editing transitions or the imagery that you use and it works. The video is homogeneous, it has a beginning a middle and an end. It's different from a lot of videos out there and the concept solidifies the whole video.

Thanks for the feedback...you can't help but learn from your own work, take stock of what could be have been done better, enjoy what worked and then move on to the next thing. Anyone who is honest enough with their own work, usually has that internal process ticking.

Every filmmaker has a set of varying circumstances that are existing at the moment of time when they shoot. All kinds of varied factors play into what it is for the moment and you can't go back. I enjoy the challenge, the process and accept the final out come and move on. I think every artist, whether painter, singer, designer, musician, etc. has the same experience, "acceptance" for what it was at that moment in time...you look at what could be improved on and try to bring that higher awareness to your next project, whatever it is. We all have that feeling too (seeing others work) and recognizing what we would have done if it had been our project, it's a pretty natural reaction.

So, thanks for the comment about film speed, it will come in handy, I appreciate it. I was not aware of the 18fps at the time of shooting. I was inspired by the time period and B&W pictures of the 30-40s as well. I wanted to pull from inspirational ideas but still make it my own, not to overly replicate or pay direct homage, but experiment with the genre. The B&W expressionist feel, turn of the century vaudevillian-like character and surrealist symbols seem to fit the concept of the song, so I went with it...it's pretty much history.

Thanks again,

Nice one Sophia.

I really like the imagery and the make up it gorgeous. You certainly have a fine video there.

Want Constructive Critique?? (if not - just leave it there)

Two things I think would have vastly improved the viewing experience for me (this is my personal opinion k?)

One, I would have liked to see more varied shots. As much as I liked the style, I got a little bored of the same shots.

Two, as you were trying to replicate / pay homage / catch the vibe? of 30's German Expressionism, I think I would have shot the thing at 18fps, that might have lent it some authenticity.

Incidentally, Have you seen Franke Potente's 'Der die Tollkirsche ausgräbt' ?

I haven't had a chance to see the whole film, but I read a few articles on it and have watched the trailer a fair number of times.
I think you'll dig it.

cheers

Moog
